Benner state prison inmate dies

An inmate at Benner state prison is reported to have died June 8.

Phillip Jackson, 24, was found hanging in his cell at about noon June 5, according to a state Department of Corrections news release. Prison staff responded with life-saving measures and he was transported to Mount Nittany Medical Center and later taken to UPMC Altoona.

Jackson had been at the prison since January serving a sentence for robbery.

State police planned to conduct an investigation, the release said.
