Rockview State Prison employee tested positive for COVID-19, Pa. Department of Corrections says

A Rockview state prison employee reported they tested positive for the new coronavirus, marking the first known COVID-19 case in a correctional facility that operates in Centre County.

Eleven employees and inmates at either Rockview or Benner state prison tested negative, according to the state Department of Corrections.

Statewide, 24 employees and 17 inmates tested positive for COVID-19, according to the DOC.

No Centre County Correctional Facility inmates have tested positive for COVID-19, county Commissioner Mike Pipe said.

The DOC released eight inmates Wednesday in an effort to mitigate the spread of the virus. Gov. Tom Wolf previously authorized the early release of as many as 1,800 inmates under his temporary reprieve authority.

None of the inmates released Wednesday were detained at Rockview or Benner state prison, and none were convicted in Centre County.
