Freezing temperatures are expected in Centre County this weekend. Here’s what you need to know
Centre County’s spring weather is about to change with anticipated subfreezing temperatures.
The National Weather Service has issued a freeze warning for Centre County from 11 p.m. Friday to 10 a.m. Saturday. Temperatures in the mid-20s are expected in portions of central Pennsylvania.
NWS is forecasting that temperatures could drop as low as 28 degrees in the State College Area. The record cold for May 9 in State College is 27 degrees, set in 1966.
Residents are encouraged to take protective measures, such as bringing potted plants inside, as low temperatures could cause damage to plants, vegetation and unprotected outdoor plumbing.
The unseasonably cold weather is thanks to a polar vortex that’s hitting large portions of the Northeast this weekend. The Arctic air is expected to bring snowfall as far south as West Virginia and extend through interior portions of the Northeast up into New England, according to AccuWeather.
In Centre County, the NWS is forecasting a chance of snow showers before 11 a.m. Saturday, turning into a mix of snow and rain before noon. There’s a slight chance of a mix of snow and rain again after 11 p.m. Saturday, according to NWS.
