Centre County DA warns of ‘very concerning’ rise in drug overdoses in the past 2 weeks

Centre County’s top prosecutor warned Friday of a “very concerning” increase in drug overdoses and deaths.

State police at Rockview, State College, Bellefonte, Patton Township and Ferguson Township police responded to at least 11 drug overdose calls in August, county District Attorney Bernie Cantorna wrote in a statement.

“This poses a serious health risk to our community and it is important that we be vigilant in regards to loved ones who are struggling with addiction,” Cantorna said. “If you know someone with a substance use disorder, make sure you take steps to have Narcan readily available so you can save someone’s life.”

About three of the 11 calls likely resulted in a drug overdose death, Cantorna wrote. The cause and manner of some deaths has not yet been confirmed by the county coroner’s office, Deputy Coroner Debra Smeal said.

Fentanyl-laced drugs are believed to be driving the increase. A majority of the calls were for a heroin overdose, but police also responded to at least one fentanyl-laced cocaine overdose, Cantora said.

Those who witness an overdose are urged to call 911. Pennsylvania law provides immunity from being charged with parole violations or drug crimes to those who act in good faith, remain with the person until help arrives and cooperate with the investigation.

There have been 12 confirmed drug overdose deaths this year in Centre County, with additional cases pending, Smeal said. Twenty-two drug overdose deaths were reported in 2018, followed by nine in 2019.
