Flu season is just around the corner. Here’s where to get your vaccine in Centre County

Flu season is just around the corner, but now is the time to prepare.

Though seasonal influenza viruses can be detected year-round, they are most common in the fall and winter. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends getting a flu vaccine before influenza activity begins to increase in October. It takes about two weeks after getting the vaccine for antibodies that protect against the flu to develop in the body.

The CDC estimates that 34,200 deaths and 490,600 hospitalizations were caused by the flu during the 2018-19 season. To prevent contracting influenza, experts recommend getting the vaccine and practice good hygiene. This year especially, medical experts recommend getting the vaccine to boost immunity as the coronavirus continues to spread throughout the United States.

Pennsylvania Secretary of Health Dr. Rachel Levine said a record-setting 130,000 Pennsylvanians were diagnosed with influenza in addition to more who had the flu but did not seek medical attention.

“Every flu season is different, but this flu season brings lots of unknowns,” Levine said earlier this month. “One thing that we do know is that the flu vaccine works. It is safe and effective and protects you from becoming sick. Flu vaccines are available now at many locations. Don’t fall behind; get your flu vaccine now.”

Here’s where you can get your flu vaccine in Centre County:

Starting this week, Mount Nittany Health on Blue Course Drive will begin operating a flu shot clinic where vaccines will be available to anyone at least 6 years old. Appointments can be made for Oct. 3, 17 and 24 for time slots between 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. All vaccinations will be given in patient vehicles.

Mount Nittany Health in Boalsburg will provide flu shots by appointment on Monday-Friday between 7-8 a.m. These vaccines will be given at a “walk-up” patient tent and are available to anyone 6 months to 18 years old.

Most local pharmacies offer flu vaccines, including those located at Target, CVS, Giant, Weis Markets, Walmart, Wegmans and Sam’s Club.

The CDC offers an online vaccine finder where users can find vaccine availability in their area.

The state Department of Health also offers flu vaccines to those who are uninsured and underinsured. Those interested are asked to call 877-724-3258 or their local state health center to schedule an appointment. Children must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian in order to receive the flu vaccination.
