Central PA hit with freezing rain Sunday morning that caused icy roads, restrictions

Central Pennsylvania residents were urged to avoid travel Sunday morning as freezing rain made roads across the region treacherous.

The National Weather Service issued an ice storm warning for areas including Centre County through early Sunday afternoon, with “significant icing” predicted. That warning was canceled just before noon, though the freezing rain left slippery sidewalks, roads and bridges.

With freezing rain that started early Sunday morning, the NWS warned residents about “extremely dangerous travel conditions” and possible power outages. PennDOT placed restrictions on several roadways Sunday morning. Level 4 restrictions on Interstates 99 and 80 were lifted at about 11 a.m. and speed restrictions were lifted about an hour later.

Areas of Centre County had as much as a quarter of an inch of ice accumulation, according to reports to the NWS.

West Penn Power reported no power outages in Centre County as of noon Sunday.
