Centre County Coroner’s Office identifies man who died in crash along Interstate 80

A Clinton County man died in a rush-hour crash Thursday along Interstate 80 in Centre County, the county coroner’s office wrote Friday.

Stephen Long, 42, died in the crash, Deputy Coroner Debra Smeal wrote. An autopsy is scheduled for Saturday.

Long, who was driving a 2019 Nissan NV200 van, rear-ended a semitrailer that was stopped in the right lane due to traffic congestion in Boggs Township, state police at Rockview wrote.

The crash was one of three reported about 4:20 p.m. Thursday within about 10 miles of each other along the major highway.

A semitrailer and minivan crashed at about mile marker 167, state Department of Transportation spokesperson Tim Nebgen said Thursday. No injuries were reported.

That was followed by a crash that involved two semitrailers at mile marker 164.4. It was not immediately clear if anyone was injured in the crash.

The eastbound lanes of I-80 between Snow Shoe and Lamar were closed for more than three hours. Bellefonte EMS, the Milesburg Fire Company, Bellefonte Fire Department, the Howard Fire Company and Eagle Valley Towing also responded.

Tow trucks work to clean up a crash around the 167 mile marker of I-80 on Thursday.
