1 dead after crash in Boalsburg, State College police say. An investigation is underway
A man who was jogging and tried to cross an intersection after dusk died Wednesday when he was hit by a driver in Boalsburg, State College police wrote in a statement Thursday.
The 43-year-old Boalsburg resident was hit about 8:20 p.m. Wednesday as he attempted to cross Boal Avenue at the intersection of Old Boalsburg Road, police wrote.
The jogger “ran into the path of an oncoming truck” that had a plow attached, police wrote. The pickup truck was owned by a private business.
Geoffrey P. Mamerow died at the scene, Centre County Coroner Scott Sayers wrote in a news release Thursday evening. Following an autopsy, Sayers said that Mamerow died as a result blunt force trauma and ruled the death accidental.
The investigation is ongoing, police wrote, adding that the preliminary investigation does not indicate that drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash.
A portion of Boal Avenue was closed for more than 2 1/2 hours. Centre LifeLink EMS, the Boalsburg Fire Company and Patton Township police also responded.
There were a dozen fatal pedestrian crashes between 2011 and 2020 in Centre County, according to state Department of Transportation data. None were in Harris Township, though nearly 60% were in the Centre Region.
Harris Township has grown from rural to residential over the years, township Manager Amy Farkas said, and a series of discussions about the Boal Avenue corridor between Warner Boulevard and Discovery Drive are planned.
