Outdoor farmers markets will soon return in Centre County. Here’s when and where
As summer approaches, flowers aren’t the only thing springing up around town. Farmers markets are coming back around Centre County, with opportunities to support local farmers and vendors all around the area.
A recent addition to the local farmers market scene will be the first to open, followed by downtown State College’s market, with all markets set to be open by early June.
Here’s what you can expect to find at each market:
Nala May Farm & Nursery (183 Walker Place Lane, Karthaus) — Open 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday and 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday, starting April 23 — Just over the Centre County line in Clearfield County, Mountaintop area residents have embraced a new market that debuted last year. In addition to produce, this year’s market will also include Amish growers and a wide variety of starter plants, hanging baskets and more.
Downtown State College Farmers Market (Locust Lane, between College Avenue and Beaver Avenue) — Open 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Friday, starting April 29 — There are 10 vendors currently listed on the market’s website, offering flowers, coffee, produce and more. The market will also feature live local bands starting May 6. The market operates downtown until November.
Bellefonte Farmers Market (West Lamb Street, opposite Gamble Mill) — Open Saturdays 8 a.m. to noon, starting April 30 — This market includes vendors selling baked goods, meats, fruit, aromatherapy and more. A full list of vendors has yet to be released but will be posted on the market’s Facebook page. This market runs until October and has off-street parking for customers.
Boalsburg Farmers Market (Pennsylvania Military Museum, 51 Boalsburg Ave.) —Open Tuesdays, 2-6 p.m., starting May 3 — Now located at the Boalsburg Fire Hall, the market will move outdoors to the military museum where it will remain until Nov. 3. All products at the market are grown or produced by local vendors. Ten new vendors will be at the market this year, with bread, mead, fresh fruit and Ethiopian meals.
North Atherton Farmers Market (Home Depot parking lot, 2615 Green Tech Drive, State College) —Open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays, starting May 14 — This market has been at the Home Depot for 12 years, bringing fresh produce and goods from farms and vendors across central Pennsylvania. The website lists what fruits, vegetables, dairy products and more are available by season so customers can have an idea of what they may see at the market. May is heavy on greens and vegetables like broccoli, kale and spinach.
Millheim Farmers Market (Patio of IngleBean Cafe, 106 E. Main St.) — Open 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays, starting May 14 — The market has moved to the back patio of IngleBean Cafe from the American Legion Pavilion, as the market has shrunk over the years. However, it still has several dedicated vendors with everything from fresh produce, wool products and more. Tamarack Farm, Cow-a-Hen Farms and Green Valley Acres Farm will be some of the vendors featured at the market.
Pine Grove Mills Farmers Market (St. Paul Lutheran Church parking lot, 277 W. Pine Grove Road) — Open Thursday, 3 to 7 p.m. starting June 9 — This market will be open until September, with fresh local products and food trucks. For every $5 in SNAP payments, customers can receive an additional $2 in fruits and vegetables through The Food Bucks Program.
