Under $4 for the 4th. Here’s where you can find the cheapest gas in Centre County

A central Pennsylvania convenience store chain announced Monday that it has reduced the price of gas.

Sheetz is now selling Unleaded 88 fuel for $3.99 a gallon and E85 for $3.49 a gallon. Unleaded is approved for vehicles of a model year since 2001 as well as light-duty trucks and SUVs, while E85 is designed only for “flexible fuel vehicles.”

The lower prices will be in effect through the July 4 holiday travel season, the Altoona-based chain said in a press release.

According to GasBuddy, the average nationwide price for a gallon of regular gas was $4.88 on Monday afternoon, an increase of $1.80 from a year ago. Pennsylvania’s average price Monday was $4.95.

The AAA expects a record volume of car travel over the July 4 holiday weekend (June 30-July 4). Despite high gas prices, a record 42 million people will hit the roads later this week, the group predicts. That will account for 88% of travelers, with fewer people traveling by air due to concerns about cancellations and delays.

Overall, AAA forecasts Independence Day travel to be almost 4% higher than last year and closer to levels last seen pre-COVID in 2019.
