Take an ‘Art Walk’ through downtown State College and leave your mark on a new mural
The public is invited to join Centred Outdoors and community partners on Sunday, July 10 at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. and Wednesday July 13 at 6 p.m. for a free and guided group “Art Walk” through downtown State College. Participants will walk and observe the sculptures, murals and functional art throughout town while learning about the artists who created them. Additionally, on Sunday Jana Marie Foundation will host a collaborative art project, where participants can add to the artwork downtown by adding a fingerprint critter or flower to a garden-themed mural.
Those joining the walks may also be interested in planning a “staycation” day in and around State College that can be enjoyed without a lot of driving or spending. Two well-known walking and hiking destinations that are free to visit and open to the public include Millbrook Marsh Nature Center and Mount Nittany.
The nature trails at Millbrook Marsh Nature Center lead visitors through scenic outdoor areas atypical from most landscapes throughout central Pennsylvania. People of all ages and fitness levels can look and listen for sights and sounds of the natural world as they follow the distinct boardwalk trails throughout the 62-acre property. Fifty of these acres consist of different types of wetland habitat that supports a wide variety of wildlife while also reducing flooding impacts in the region. This important and rare ecosystem is protected from development with a conservation easement between ClearWater Conservancy and Penn State and open to the public year-round.
Mount Nittany is also within a short drive from downtown and a hike to its summit can be an invigorating way to begin or wrap up your day. Hikers have the choice between two loops, the 4.8 mile Blue Trail or 3.7 mile White Trail. Both will lead you along steep and challenging trails to awe-inspiring scenic vistas, including the Mike Lynch Overlook where you can take in one of the most iconic views of Happy Valley. The hike promises to be strenuous yet rewarding for everyone, whether it is their first or 51st time.
In addition to enjoying some fresh air and fun, another benefit to visiting one or any combination of these destinations in and around State College might include a boosted mood. Art and nature to evoke one’s sense of awe, a feeling we have when an experience leaves us with a sense of mystery or wonder, which can result in more positive emotions and decreased feelings of stress. Two known ways to access awe include exposure to art and nature and fortunately State College is home to an abundance of both. There are many options for planning a truly “AWEsome” day in central PA dedicated to celebrating the local art and landscapes that help make this region such a vibrant and beautiful place to live and play.
All Centred Outdoors guided events are free, and open to the public. To join the guided art walks on July 10 and 13, meet at 3 Dots Downtown (137 E. Beaver Ave.). An online and printable guide detailing the locations and titles of nearly 40 works of art can be accessed via the Downtown State College Improvement District’s website (www. downtownstatecollege.com/art-walk).
