New York City woman dead after pre-dawn crash on major highway in Centre County, police say
A New York City woman died and another person was injured Saturday after a pre-dawn crash on a major highway in Centre County, state police at Rockview wrote in a crash report.
Julie M. Volk, 37, likely crashed about 2:50 a.m. Saturday because of fatigue, police wrote. She was driving in the two westbound lanes of Interstate 80 in Marion Township.
Volk was driving about 55 mph when she abruptly weaved between the two lanes four times. She was unable to regain control and the vehicle landed on its driver’s side, police wrote.
The vehicle — which police did not describe — slid for about 220 feet before stopping, police wrote. Volk died at the crash. Her passenger, whom police did not identify, was treated for injuries that are not life-threatening.
There were seven fatal crashes between 2012 and 2021 in Marion Township, data from the state Transportation Department showed. Twelve fatal crashes were reported during that same period in Rush Township, the most in Centre County.
