New York man detained at Rockview state prison died by suicide, officials say
A New York man detained at Rockview state prison died last week, the state Department of Corrections wrote in a statement Wednesday.
Randy L. Houghwot, 40, was found unresponsive in his cell Aug. 31, the Department of Corrections wrote, and prison medical staff “immediately responded and provided life-saving measures.” Emergency Medical Services arrived and advanced life support measures were continued as Houghwot was transferred to Mount Nittany Medical Center.
Days later, he died at the hospital at 10:07 p.m. Sept. 3, according to the Department of Corrections.
Centre County Coroner Scott Sayers said Houghwot died by suicide. The Pennsylvania State Police will conduct an investigation, officials wrote.
In its release, the DOC wrote Houghwot was serving a one- to four-year sentence for criminal trespass; he had been at Rockview state prison since February.
