Passenger dead in semitrailer crash that closed Interstate 80 in Centre County for hours
A passenger died Sunday in a semitrailer crash that closed a major highway in Centre County for more than nine hours, state police at Rockview wrote in a crash report.
Kulwant Singh, 48, of California, was killed when the driver of a 2016 Freightliner lost control about 3 p.m. along Interstate 80 eastbound in Snow Shoe Township, police wrote.
The 46-year-old driver from California left the highway and hit an embankment. The vehicle overturned on the passenger side, police wrote. Singh was ejected and fatally injured.
The driver was taken to Mount Nittany Medical Center by Snow Shoe EMS for treatment of possible injuries. The Snow Shoe Volunteer Fire Company and Rees Hauling and Towing assisted.
The eastbound lanes were closed between the Snow Shoe and Milesburg exits — about 10 miles — until about 12:40 a.m. Monday. Traffic was diverted to state Route 144.
There were two fatal crashes during the previous decade in Snow Shoe Township, the most recently available data from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation showed.
Twelve fatal crashes were reported over the same period in Rush Township, the most of any municipality in Centre County.
