Recycling: CCRRA to expand Centre County curbside recycling program in 2023

The Centre County Recycling and Refuse Authority currently collects recycling curbside from over 28,000 households. We are expanding our service in 2023 to the following areas: Howard Borough, Howard Township, Marion Township and Walker Township.

If you live in one of those municipalities, you may be able to add curbside pick-up of recyclables to your home next year. The new service area will include households in Howard, Hublersburg, Jacksonville, Lamar (Centre County portion only), Mingoville, Mt. Eagle, Nittany, Snydertown and Zion. Quick disclaimer before I go any further: This service is only available to those who currently do not have curbside recycling service. Many local haulers do offer curbside recycling collection and we do not want to compete with them.

If you do not have curbside recycling and this sounds interesting, more information can be found on our website at www.centrecountyrecycles.org or by calling our office at 814-238-7005. The cost for weekly collection of recyclables curbside is $9/month. Once service is secured, our crew will deliver a curbside recycling bin to the residence along with a Guideline to Curbside Recycling flyer. We hope many residents can take advantage of this service.

Another Curbside Recycling Update for 2023

This update is for residents who currently participate in the curbside recycling program. Our curbside collections crew will begin tagging non-compliant curbside bins beginning in 2023. If a customer is putting recyclables out in a container that is not an approved red curbside recycling bin, our crew will leave a note for said customer.

It can be quite challenging as well as a safety hazard for the crews to collect recyclables from containers that are either too large, too tall or too heavy. Crews cannot reach the bottom of many bins that customers put out at the curb.

Beginning in January, the curbside crews will leave a note on unapproved curbside bins. If a customer receives a note, they will just need to call our office with their address and the crews will deliver a new red curbside recycling bin at no charge to the resident. Using this approved recycling bin at the curb helps our crew safely collect recyclables. In addition, when the crew sees a red bin, they know to stop for collection. Crews may not know to stop at a residence if recycling is put out in a non-red bin.

If you receive a note on your bin after the New Year, be sure to call our office so we may deliver a brand-new red curbside recycling bin. Think of it as a Christmas present for being a dedicated recycler. Did I mention this replacement bin is free of charge to the resident?

In closing, I would like to send my heartfelt holiday wishes out to all of you who continue to read my column. I do hear from many of you often and I hope I can continue to keep you updated with pertinent recycling news.

Happy Holidays and thanks for recycling!
