Ohio man seriously injured, flown to hospital after head-on crash on I-80 in Centre County

An Ohio man was seriously injured Tuesday in a head-on crash with a semitrailer on a major highway in Centre County, state police at Rockview said Wednesday.

The 85-year-old driver of a van was traveling westbound about 11:15 p.m. Tuesday in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 80 in Rush Township, police spokesman Christopher Fox said.

The driver, Fox said, had a “medical episode.” He was flown by medical helicopter to UPMC Altoona for treatment of serious injuries.

The driver of the semitrailer, a 27-year-old man from Iowa, was not injured, Fox said. The eastbound lanes of I-80 were closed for more than 2 1/2 hours.

There were 38 crashes with either serious or fatal injuries during the previous decade in rural Rush Township, data from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation showed. That trailed only State College, where 44 such crashes were reported.
