Fire crews from four counties called to second-alarm dwelling fire in Taylor Township

A two-story home was destroyed by a fire Monday in rural Centre County, one that volunteer firefighters from four counties battled for more than two hours as smoke billowed into the air.

No injuries were reported, but the homeowner was displaced, Port Matilda Fire Company Deputy Chief Derrick Reese said.

Firefighters from Centre, Clearfield, Blair and Huntingdon counties were dispatched about 1:15 p.m. Monday to the 1000 block of South Mountain Road in Taylor Township.

The fire reportedly began when a gas stove exploded, the Columbia Volunteer Fire Company wrote in a Facebook post. The blaze was not under control as of about 3 p.m.

Alpha and Philipsburg were among Centre County fire departments called to the scene, along with at least seven other fire departments from neighboring counties. Moshannon Valley EMS and West Penn Power also assisted.

It was the second Centre County home to be destroyed in the past three days. The home of a Wingate Elementary School student was destroyed Saturday in Howard Township.

More than $1,400 was raised for the family by the Wingate Parent Teacher Association, the group wrote on Facebook.
