With the new school year fast approaching, many parents are looking at a looming bill for the countless pencils, folders and glue sticks needed for the upcoming year.

Families are expected to pay $890 for back-to-school supplies this year, according to the National Retail Federation. Several businesses and organizations are helping parents this summer thought supply giveaways to help cut costs. Here’s a look at options:

  • Faith Centre at 131 S. Allegheny St. in Bellefonte is hosting its annual back to school giveaway from July 31-Aug. 5. The event traditionally gives out free sneakers and outfits to school-aged children.
  • The Salvation Army will host a back-to-school giveaway and closet clean out to provide clothing and shoes to families in need this year. Families applying for the program must bring proof of residence, proof of household income or expenses, and the student’s last report card or birth certificate. Families can sign up for the back-to-school program at the Salvation Army, 2603 E. College Ave., from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday.
  • Two Centre County Verizon stores are participating in the company’s 11th annual back to school giveaway this year. Locations on 141 S. Allegheny St. in Bellefonte and 2615 E. College Ave. in State College will give away backpacks filled with school supplies at 1 p.m. on June 30. The program from Verizon retailers will distribute 120,000 backpacks throughout 1,000 locations over the country. Backpacks not claimed will be donated to local schools, according to a press release.
  • The Centre County YMCA is collecting new school supplies through Aug. 13 at the State College Texas Roadhouse and all YMCA branches. Those donating will receive a coupon for a free Texas Roadhouse appetizer. A full list of suggested supplies can be found on the YMCA’s website and all supplies donated must be new. The office of state Rep. Paul Takac, D-College Township, located at 216 W. Hamilton Ave., is also a drop-off site from 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Supplies will be distributed at the YMCA’s Summer Lunch Program sites.
