Man seriously injured, flown to hospital after crash in rural Centre County, police say
A Clinton County man was seriously injured Wednesday after his vehicle was hit by a teenage driver in rural Centre County, the Spring Township Police Department’s top officer said Thursday.
A 17-year-old Bellefonte boy driving a Jeep Cherokee hit the 52-year-old man’s vehicle about 5:50 p.m. Wednesday along the 800 block of Axemann Road, Spring Township police Chief Adam Salyards said.
The teenager was driving northbound when he lost control as he attempted a turn. He crossed into oncoming traffic and struck the driver’s side door of a Jeep Grand Cherokee, Salyards said.
The Clinton County man was ejected and flown by a medical helicopter to UPMC Williamsport for treatment of a serious head injury, Salyards said. Neither his passenger — a 43-year-old Bellefonte woman — nor the teenager were injured.
The teen showed no signs of impairment, Salyards said. Axemann Road was closed for about an hour. No charges or citations were filed as of Thursday; an investigation is ongoing. Pleasant Gap and Bellefonte EMS assisted.
There were 31 serious crashes during the past decade in Spring Township, state Transportation Department data showed. That mark trailed only State College (39) and was the most of any municipality outside the Centre Region.
