Music festival, speakers and more: Guide to Black History Month events in Centre County
February is Black History Month, and events are underway in Centre County to celebrate the contributions of African Americans throughout U.S. history.
In State College, Black History Month kicked off on Feb. 2 with the observance of National Day of Racial Healing, where conversations on racial barriers took place. That was followed by a Welcome Event Dance Party on Feb. 4 in the State College Municipal Building.

Feb. 7: “Underscored” by Ephrat Asherie Dance at 7:30 p.m. at Eisenhower Auditorium, University Park.
Feb. 7-10: Penn State School of Music’s African American Music Festival, held at venues around campus.
Feb. 8: Black Lives Matter at School Week of Action community art event from 4-5:30 p.m. at 3 Dots Downtown, 137 E. Beaver Ave., State College.
Feb. 14: Douglass Day 2024 Transcribe-a-Thon from noon-3 p.m. at Pattee Library, University Park.
Feb. 20: “Exploring Identity, Love, and Being Black in America in Fiction Writing: A Conversation with Award-Winning Author Jason Mott” at 4 p.m. Register online for the virtual event.
Feb. 23: Black History Month Social from 6-8 p.m. at the State College Municipal Building. Register online.
Feb. 29: “How Women of Color Transformed the Suffrage Movement,” from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at Schlow Centre Region Library. RSVP to aauwscprograms2024@gmail.com by Feb. 26.
