A Pittsburgh man incarcerated at Rockview state prison died Tuesday while playing basketball, the state Department of Corrections wrote in a statement Thursday.

Evan Davis, 32, died after collapsing in the prison’s gym, Superintendent Bobbi Jo Salamon said in a statement. Staff and medical personnel immediately responded and provided life-saving measures, she said.

State police at Rockview are investigating, as required by state policy. A message left with the Centre County Coroner’s Office was not immediately returned.

Davis was serving a four- to eight-year sentence after being found guilty during a May 2021 bench trial of drug and firearms charges in Allegheny County. He was at Rockview state prison since March 2022, the DOC wrote.

A message left with Davis’ former defense attorney was not immediately returned.
