1 person flown to hospital after 3-vehicle crash that closed I-80 for hours Monday night
Part of Interstate 80 in Centre and Clinton counties was closed for about seven hours after a three-vehicle crash Monday evening led to one driver being transported to a nearby hospital via LifeFlight.
According to a spokesperson for the Pennsylvania State Police, the crash occurred when Vehicles No. 2 and No. 3 slowed down for a construction zone but Vehicle No. 1 failed to see the slower-moving traffic. Vehicle No. 1 rear-ended the second vehicle, which then pushed into the third vehicle.
The driver of Vehicle No. 2 had to be extricated and flown to Williamsport for “moderate injuries,” police said. The other two drivers suffered minor injuries and denied medical attention.
All lanes of I-80 westbound between the Lamar exit in Clinton County (173) and the Jacksonville Road exit in Centre County (163) were closed just after 5 p.m. Monday, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.
All traffic was being diverted off to Nittany Valley Drive (state Route 64), Centre County 911 wrote in a Facebook post, reporting that traffic was backed up in the area. Centre County 911 posted at about 12:15 a.m. that the road was back open.
The crash happened in Centre County’s Marion Township, according to the Centre County Emergency Alerts and Information Facebook page. Crews from both Clinton and Centre counties responded, Centre County Emergency Alerts and Information reported.
