Woman hospitalized, Penns Valley man cited after head-on crash in Centre County

A woman was seriously injured Wednesday evening in a head-on crash in the Centre Region.

Richard L. Wasson, 18, of Penn Township, was driving a Hyundai Santa Fe westbound about 5:45 p.m. Wednesday on the 3600 block of East College Avenue, State College police Lt. Kelly Aston said Thursday.

He crossed the centerline and slammed head-on into a Saturn Vue driven by a 24-year-old Cumberland County woman, Aston said. Both were wearing their seat belts.

The woman was flown by medical helicopter to UPMC Williamsport for treatment of serious but not life-threatening injuries, Aston said. Wasson was treated at Mount Nittany Medical Center for injuries that were not life-threatening.

Wasson received a summary traffic citation Thursday for driving on roadways laned for traffic. He had not entered a plea as of Thursday afternoon.

Both lanes of East College Avenue were closed until about 7:25 p.m., Aston said. Pleasant Gap and Centre LifeLink EMS, Pleasant Gap and Alpha fire companies, state police at Rockview and Spring Township police assisted.

There were 25 crashes with serious injuries between 2014 and 2023 in College Township, state Department of Transportation data showed. That was the sixth most of any municipality in Centre County.
