Recycling: Mark your calendar for these upcoming earth-friendly events in Centre County

We love our local earth-friendly events. I have listed some spring events below, along with a description of each. Check them out and be sure to take advantage of as many as possible.

Recycled Art Show, Art Alliance of Central PA, April 4-28

Stop by the Art Alliance’s Downtown Gallery, April 4-28, to peruse pieces from the 2025 Recycled Art Show. The theme this for this year’s show is “The Outer Limits.” The Downtown Gallery is located at 114 S. Allen St. Local recycled pieces will be on display for art lovers to view and vote for their favorites. Select pieces from the show will be moved to the Authority’s Interpretive Center during the summer for display.

Watershed Clean Up Day, April 12, 8 a.m.-noon

This marks the 29th year for ClearWater Conservancy’s Watershed Cleanup Day! Since 1997, volunteers have prevented more than 6 million pounds of trash from entering our local waterways and with your help, we’ll make a big difference this year too! Earth Day Celebration, April 19, State College Borough, noon-4 p.m.

Stop by the Earth Day Celebration at the State College Borough Building and the Sidney Friedman Parklet for engagement stations, food vendors, sustainable arts and crafts, and workshops including interactive activities for the public. This event is great for all ages and fun for the whole family!

Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event, April 25-26, CCRRA, 253 Transfer Road, Bellefonte

Our HHW Collection Event will be held on April 25-26. Online registration is required. Visit www.centrecountyrecycles.org for more information and to register. As always, this is a free event. Acceptable items, from households only, include oil-based paints, insecticides, toxic chemicals, antifreeze, cleaners, CFL bulbs, fluorescent tubes, flammables and more. Do not bring latex paint, motor oil, medications, explosives or batteries to the event.

Tire Collection Event, May 3, CCRRA, 253 Transfer Road, Bellefonte

The Centre County Recycling and Refuse Authority is holding a Tire Collection Event on Saturday, May 3. Centre County residents must register online to pick an appointment time and can bring up to 12 tires that day for free. Tires will be recycled. Additional information and online registration can be found at www.centrecountyrecycles.org.

AAUW State College Used Book Sale, May 17-20

The AAUW State College Used Book Sale, one of the largest used book sales in the country, is a popular community event held annually in the spring since 1962. During the sale, thousands of visitors converge on Penn State’s Snider Agricultural Arena to browse and purchase up to quarter of a million books and other materials. Special sale features include children’s books, collectibles, puzzles and games, a half-price day, and a “bag day” with further discounts.
