A Centre County man died Monday after he was hit by a driver in rural Snow Shoe Township.

Thomas E. Hipple, 73, of Snow Shoe, was killed about 9:10 a.m. Monday along the on the 700 block of East Sycamore Road, state police at Rockview wrote in a crash report.

Hipple was crossing the two-lane highway when a 47-year-old Snow Shoe man driving a 2016 Hyundai Accent hit him head-on, police wrote. He died at the scene. An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday, Centre County Chief Deputy Coroner John D. Kubalak said in a press release.

The driver was uninjured. He will be cited for a traffic violation, though the crash report did not make clear if he will face other charges.

East Sycamore Road was closed for about three hours between Beech Creek Road and Fountain Road. Pine Glen Fire Co. assisted because of a Snow Shoe Fire Co. manpower shortage, as well as Snow Shoe EMS.

No fatal pedestrian crashes have been reported in Snow Shoe Township since at least 2005, according to state Department of Transportation data. The rural township has a population of about 1,620, according to the most recent census.
