As communities across the United States pause Thursday to reflect on the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks and honor both the fallen heroes and survivors, Centre County is no exception. For those looking to mark the anniversary with community members, there are several observances planned.

University Park

The Penn State College of Republicans continued their tradition this week of placing 2,997 American flags on Old Main lawn to honor each victim of the attacks. The memorial was set up Monday evening, and the flags will be on display until 4 p.m. Friday.

At 5 p.m. Thursday, the College Republicans will lead a memorial service on Old Main lawn. Students and community members are encouraged to attend.

Additionally, there will be an hourlong reading of Charles Dumas’ “9/11 — A Day in the Life of A People” at the Penn State Downtown Theatre at 6 p.m. Thursday.

Dumas is a professor emeritus in the Penn State School of Theatre. His play imagines the lives of 12 ordinary individuals who experienced the events of 9/11.

Bellefonte

The Logan Fire Company No. 1 will host a memorial service at 6:30 p.m. Thursday outside its station at 120 E. Howard St.

Attendees are asked to park in downtown Bellefonte to allow space for fire apparatus to park at the station.

The commemoration will honor Navy Lt. Jonas Martin Panik, a 1993 graduate of Bellefonte Area High School, along with the thousands who lost their lives in the attacks.

College Township

While there is no official commemoration being held in College Township, the area is home to a permanent 9/11 memorial.

It is located on Benner Pike in Centre County Memorial Park. The inscription reads “Through blurred eyes we find the strength and courage to soar beyond the moment. In memory of all who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. Their courage, compassion and loyalty during a time of national distress defines the character of this great nation.”
