As the holidays approach, many in our community are filled with excitement planning gatherings, meals and celebrations. But for far too many of our neighbors, this season brings more anxiety than joy. The pressure to provide a holiday meal, keep up with rising bills, or make the season special for their children can feel overwhelming.

At the State College Food Bank, we see these challenges up close every day. Families who were just getting by a few months ago are now reaching out for help. Many are facing reduced work hours, higher grocery costs and uncertainty about what the coming months will bring.

That uncertainty has only deepened in recent weeks. The federal government shutdown has created financial strain for both federal employees and the wider community, and proposed changes to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) could make it even harder for low-income households to afford groceries. For families who already stretch every dollar, these disruptions are frightening. They are also a reminder of just how fragile food security can be.

Despite these challenges, we continue to see the incredible resilience of our neighbors and the compassion of those who step up to help. As we prepare for one of the busiest times of the year, our shelves are filling thanks to food drives, corporate collections and generous individual donations. Volunteers are sorting food, stocking shelves, and making sure every distribution we give out is filled with care and dignity.

Last year during the holidays, we served more than 650 households directly and helped provide an additional 740 families with meals through our community partnerships. We expect those numbers to rise again this year.

Every donation, whether it’s a can of green beans, a turkey or a financial contribution, helps us provide hope when it’s needed most. Together, we can make sure that every family in Centre County has a place at the table this holiday season.

As we move toward the new year, uncertainty may remain, but so does our commitment to one another. The State College Food Bank will continue to be here, every day, for every neighbor, working toward a community where no one goes hungry.
