Upward of 10 people were displaced and a two-story apartment in Milesburg was heavily damaged Friday by a fire that sent flames and smoke billowing into the air.

At least eight fire departments and two emergency medical services were dispatched about 3:25 p.m. Friday to the 100 block of Turnpike Street. The second story appeared to be destroyed.

Citizen’s Hook & Ladder Co. Deputy Chief Brian Burns told the Centre Daily Times seven to 10 people were in the building when the blaze began in one of the apartments on the second floor. All were evacuated and no injuries were immediately reported, Burns said.

Firefighters were largely able to battle the fire without issue, though Burns said they had to work around some “hoarding conditions.” State Route 144 was closed between Water Street in Milesburg and North Allegheny Street in Spring Township.

The property was last sold in December 2024 for $385,000, according to Centre County property records.

Fire departments from Milesburg, Bellefonte, Howard, Snow Shoe, Pleasant Gap, State College and Lock Haven were among those that responded. Bellefonte and Centre LifeLink EMS also responded.
