How much will Centre County’s Beast Games winner Tyler Lucas pay in taxes? A lot
Bellefonte native and former Penn State wide receiver Tyler Lucas will receive a hefty bill from the tax man after winning the $5 million grand prize on the Beast Games, the Amazon Prime game show hosted by YouTuber MrBeast.
The reported $5.105 million awarded by MrBeast, whose real name is Jimmy Donaldson, would put Lucas in the U.S.’s top income tax bracket. As such, he’d owe the federal government 37% of the prize money.
Then comes the state tax bill. Lucas lives in California, the Centre Daily Times reports. If he files separately from a spouse, he’d owe the Golden State 12.3% of the prize money, plus $72,219.84, according to the California tax rate schedules.
So what could the potential payout be?
Take-home: $2,516,015.16, or just less than half of the total prize, assuming Lucas’ accountant knows only as much as the 24-year-old who wrote this article.
If the Beast Games operates as it did in its inaugural season, Lucas will be on the hook for the taxes himself.
The last champion, Jeffrey Randall Allen, told a podcast that Donaldson’s production company wired him his $10 million prize directly. He then had to figure out the taxes on his own.
