Recycling: Mark your calendar for these upcoming Centre County earth-friendly events
We love our local, earth-friendly events — and spring is full of them! Below are several opportunities to get involved, learn something new, and support sustainability in our community. Be sure to check them out and take advantage of as many as you can.
Recycled Art Show
Art Alliance of Central Pennsylvania
April 3-18
Stop by the Art Alliance Gallery, 818 Pike St. Lemont, to view pieces from the 2026 Recycled Art Show. This year’s theme is “On the Books.” Local artists will display recycled-material creations, and visitors can vote for their favorites. Select pieces will be moved to the Authority’s Interpretive Center for summer display.
Banff Centre Mountain Film Festival World Tour
The State Theatre
April 10-11
Hosted by the Sierra Club Moshannon Group with three unique film programs on Friday at 6:30 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Guests are encouraged to arrive early to meet local environmental groups and enter to win a Sierra Club prize.
Watershed Cleanup Day
ClearWater Conservancy
April 18, 8 a.m.-noon
For decades, volunteers have prevented more than 6 million pounds of trash from entering local waterways during ClearWater Conservancy’s Watershed Cleanup Day. With your help, we can make an even bigger impact this year. Visit clearwaterconservancy.org for details and volunteer information.
Earth Fest
Centre Region Parks and Recreation Authority
April 19, 1-5 p.m.
Come celebrate Earth during the Millbrook Marsh Earth Fest celebration. Spend the afternoon outdoors exploring displays from environmental groups, participating in activities and games, visiting local vendors, and enjoying local entertainment. This event is great for all ages and fun for the whole family!
Paper Shredding Event
Milesburg Community Center
April 21, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
Attend this free paper shredding event sponsored by state Rep. Paul Takac’s office. RSVP by calling 814-308-0569 or by emailing Reptakac@pahouse.net. Staff will be collecting donations for the Military Food Distribution Program. Please consider bringing a few items to contribute.
Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event
Centre County Recycling and Refuse Authority
April 24-25
Online registration is required. Visit centrecountyrecycles.org for details and to register. This free event accepts household items such as oil-based paints, insecticides, toxic chemicals, antifreeze, cleaners, CFL bulbs, fluorescent tubes, and flammables. Please do not bring latex paint, motor oil, medications, explosives, or batteries.
AAUW State College Used Book Sale
AAUW State College
May 9-12
One of the largest used book sales in the country, this annual event has been held each spring since 1962 at Snider Agricultural Arena. Shoppers can browse up to a quarter million books and materials. Special features include children’s books, collectibles, puzzles and games, a half-price day, and a popular “bag day” with extra discounts. Please bring your own reusable bag.
Tire Collection Event
Centre County Recycling and Refuse Authority
Sept. 12
Centre County residents must register online and select an appointment time. Each household may bring up to 12 tires for free, and all tires will be recycled. Registration will be available later this year.
