Helicopter called after multi-vehicle crash in rural Centre County
What appeared to be a medical helicopter landed on a highway off-ramp Thursday after a multi-vehicle crash that also snarled traffic in rural Centre County.
The helicopter took off about 11:15 a.m. Thursday near the intersection of an Interstate 80 eastbound exit ramp and North Eagle Valley Road in Boggs Township.
According to initial emergency dispatches, crews were called because of a crash involving a tanker truck and an SUV. The extent of any injuries was not immediately known.
The I-80 eastbound exit ramp at mile marker 158 was closed about 10:50 a.m. and reopened by 5 p.m., according to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s real-time traffic information service.
A traffic backlog on North Eagle Valley Road appeared to dissipate by about 11:20 a.m., though a heavy presence of first responders remained. Centre County emergency dispatchers encouraged drivers in a Facebook post to avoid the area.
