Semitrailer’s tires catch fire in Bellefonte

The front eight wheels of a semitrailer caught on fire Saturday morning, shortly after the truck driver pulled into a service station at 875 N. Eagle Valley Road in Bellefonte.

The small blaze was stopped within 15 minutes of calling the fire department.

Milesburg Fire Company Chief Dan Boring said the driver had a blown tire and, after entering the truck stop, noticed smoke coming from the trailer. The driver attributed the smoke to the heat of the tire and went into the building, Boring said. Several minutes later, someone alerted the driver that the tires were on fire.

Both Boring and Deputy Chief Corey Bowmaster said the blown tire was the cause of the fire.

The fire was reported at 10:01 a.m. Saturday, and Bowmaster said he and his crew arrived 10 minutes later. Once the department was at the scene, it took four minutes to get the fire under control.

The male driver declined to comment or identify himself.

Howard Fire Department also assisted with the fire.
