Fire companies respond to building fire in downtown Bellefonte
About seven people were evacuated Wednesday from the Decker Building as several fire departments extinguished an electrical fire inside the more than 100-year-old building in downtown Bellefonte, the borough police chief said.
There were no injuries, Chief Shawn Weaver said. American Red Cross volunteers assisted two adults who were displaced by the fire, according to a tweet from the organization.
Emergency crews responded to 202 W. High St. about 9 p.m. Wednesday for a second-alarm building fire. Firefighters had the blaze under control in less than one hour, Weaver said.
The fire was contained to four upstairs apartments, one of which is a “total loss,” Weaver said.
The emergency response was delayed by about five minutes because crews were initially dispatched to two erroneous locations. Crews were first dispatched to Potter Street and West Water Street, Weaver said.
Parts of Spring, Water and High streets were closed for more than two hours.
Undine, Logan, Pleasant Gap, Walker Township, Milesburg and Citizen’s Hook & Ladder fire companies were called to respond. Spring Township and state police and Bellefonte EMS were also on scene.
Alpha and Snow Shoe fire companies were transferred to the Undine station for standby.
