Delays expected as PennDOT begins work on Interstate 99 in Spring Township

Motorists should expect slight delays next week as work begins on Interstate 99 in Spring Township.

Starting Monday, PennDOT will begin work on the $4.6 million improvement project, which will improve ride quality and extend the life of about 2.5 miles of roadway, according to a news release. All construction will be done in accordance with guidance provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and state Department of Health.

The contractor, Glenn O. Hawbaker Inc. of State College, will implement a long-term closure of the right (travel) lane on I-99 southbound between the Interstate 80 eastbound off-ramp, located at the Bellefonte and Pleasant Gap exit.

PennDOT expects drivers will experience minor delays while crews work to prepare the road for an asphalt overlay which will be carried out during the week.

In a release, PennDOT said the traffic pattern will be in effect for approximately four weeks, but the agency will issue updates as work shifts between the travel and passing lanes and between the south and northbound lanes.

The COVID-19 safety plan includes protocols for social distancing, use of face masks and cleaning practices.

Overall work on the project, which is expected to take place over the 2020-21 construction season, includes resurfacing, restoration and rehabilitation of the road, installation of a guide rail, pavement markings and other construction.

All work is weather and schedule dependent.
