Bellefonte woman killed in Walker Township crash, marking second fatal crash in four days

A Bellefonte woman died Friday after she rear-ended another vehicle and crashed into a guardrail in Walker Township, state police at Rockview wrote Saturday in a crash report.

Sherry L. Thompson, 47, was killed in the crash. A 54-year-old Howard man driving a 2017 Lincoln MKZ stopped about 3:45 p.m. Friday on state Route 64 to turn left onto Snydertown Road when he was rear-ended, police wrote.

Thompson, who was driving a 2004 Dodge Dakota pickup eastbound, then hit a guardrail north of the two-lane road, police wrote. She was transported by medical helicopter to UPMC Williamsport; a coroner pronounced her dead upon arrival.

Thompson died of significant chest trauma, Lycoming County Coroner Chuck Kiessling Jr. said Monday. Her death was ruled accidental. Toxicology results are pending. The Howard man was not injured in the crash, police wrote.

A GoFundMe page was created to help Thompson’s family with funeral expenses.

Walker Township and Pleasant Gap fire companies as well as Pleasant Gap and Mount Nittany EMS responded.

There were seven fatal crashes between 2011 and 2020 in Walker Township, according to state Department of Transportation data. That was tied for the fifth most among municipalities in Centre County.

A Mingoville woman died during a rush-hour crash Tuesday in Walker Township. Two others were also injured in the crash.
