The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announced Wednesday that work will start on a streetscape project in Bellefonte Borough.

The construction will take place along about 600 feet of state Route 144 and Spring Street, all within the borough’s municipal boundaries.

Big Rock Paving Inc., the Muncy-based contractor PennDOT chose to complete the $316,000 project, is set to begin work on the project Tuesday. This work includes the improvement of concrete sidewalks, driveways and curbing.

Route 144 will be down to one lane while the work takes place, according to PennDOT. Flaggers will likely be stationed along Spring Street as well.

“Drivers should also expect to encounter flaggers in the roadway on Spring Street for the duration of the project,” PennDOT’s announcement reads. “Additionally, there will be instances where the shoulders and sidewalks are closed along with restrictions to on-street parking.”

PennDOT expects the project to be completed sometime in November, weather permitting.

This construction project isn’t the only one that PennDOT is starting in September though — the department announced earlier this week that work is set to begin Wednesday on the highly-anticipated I-80/I-99 high-speed interchange.

The $259 million interchange project will use high-speed ramps to provide a nonstop connection between the two major highways in Boggs, Spring and Marion townships, meaning that drivers will no longer have to use state Route 26 to access either highway.

PennDOT expects the high-speed interchange project to be completed in 2030.
