I-80 in Centre County reopens after hourslong closure following crash
Most roads reopened by 9 a.m. Tuesday after the first snowfall of the season caused icy conditions, but a portion of Interstate 80 within Centre County stayed closed through the afternoon.
According to public emergency services information, PennDOT shut down I-80 westbound at Exit 178 and all drivers were expected to use the Brown Detour. That was lifted by 1:45 p.m.
Local schools also issued delays due to icy road and sidewalk conditions. State College, Bald Eagle and Penns Valley area school districts opened one hour late, while Bellefonte operated on a two-hour delay. Philipsburg-Osceola opted to close Tuesday after initially declaring a two-hour delay.
A snow squall warning was in effect in parts of the county from midnight through 1:45 a.m.
First responders were called to I-80 in Boggs Township at about 3:30 a.m. Tuesday for a report of a tractor-trailer over the guardrail and a male driver entrapped, according to dispatch reports. After crews arrived on scene, another tractor-trailer jackknifed, blocking both westbound lanes, Citizens Hook & Ladder Company wrote in a Facebook post.
It took more than an hour to extricate the driver of the first tractor-trailer, fire company officials wrote.
In addition to Citizens, Pleasant Gap, Snow Shoe, Howard, Logan and Undine fire companies were among those called to the I-80 crash, along with Bellefonte Fire Police.
