A juvenile riding an electric scooter was hit by a driver Monday night after police said the scooterist ran a stop sign at a Bellefonte intersection.

Borough police said video from a nearby residence shows the rider enter the intersection of Wilson and High streets without stopping and being hit by a sedan. The juvenile was wearing dark clothing, police said, when they were hit about 9:10 p.m.

The rider was transported by ambulance for medical treatment, police said. The department’s Facebook post did not make clear how old the juvenile is, the extent of their injuries or if the driver was injured.

A message left Tuesday morning with the police department was not immediately returned. Spring Township police, the Logan and Undine fire companies, Bellefonte EMS and Mount Nittany EMS assisted.

Crashes caused by running a stop sign hit a 10-year low last year in Centre County, according to state Department of Transportation statistics. There were 17 such crashes, most of which occurred in State College.

Electric scooters are illegal on public roads and sidewalks in Pennsylvania. Borough police said they can only be operated on private property. The department urged parents and guardians to review the law with their children, saying it is “essential for the safety of all residents.”
