Bellefonte school board considers proposed calendar

A proposed 2016-17 Bellefonte Area School District calendar was unveiled Tuesday night at the school board meeting that could see the last day of classes for students on May 30, 2017.

That’s, of course, pending any snow days that need to be made up, Superintendent Cheryl Potteiger said.

The calendar has built-in snow makeup days, and was planned in conjunction with Bald Eagle Area, Penns Valley Area and Central Pennsylvania Institute of Science and Technology.

However, Assistant Superintendent Michelle Saylor is hoping amendments can be made.

She said professional development days for teachers are “front and backloaded” in the calendar plan, leaving a chunk of months in the middle of the school year with no professional development days.

Saylor said spreading those days out through the year could benefit teachers and administrators.

In other board news, Potteiger said schools in Spring Township are being taken care of while the area is under a boil water advisory.

CPI was supplied with 78,000 bottles of water and portable bathrooms, while the school is without or with little water pressure.

Pleasant Gap Elementary School has enough water pressure for bathroom use, but is using bottled water, Potteiger said.

The Spring Township Water Authority issued a water warning Saturday.

A press release on Monday then said there was a loss of water pressure due to a well problem, and urged residents to boil water before use for precautions against possible contamination like bacteria.
