Talleyrand Park to welcome freight building

On April 18, weather permitting, the Bellefonte Historical and Cultural Association will move this 1869 freight warehouse from the Bellefonte Waterfront Development District to Talleyrand Park, a project in the works since March 2015.

Sometimes in order to preserve buildings you have to move them.

That’s the case with Bellefonte’s freight building.

The building has long been located along Dunlop Street, but it may not have been ideal for a developer who wanted to buy the property once the waterfront revitalization project is finished.

“The alternative would be us waiting for a contractor to see if it could be reused and remain where it was,” borough Manager Ralph Stewart said. “It was one of the last possibilities, but that was probably doubtful.”

The Bellefonte Historical and Cultural Association came forward with a solution — one of its own members.

David Kurtz, a longtime local kayak and canoe instructor, as well as a BHCA member, offered to fund the relocation if the building could be made into a kayak and canoe museum.

An agreement was formed between the borough, BHCA and Bellefonte Area Industrial Development Authority to make it happen.

Once one of Bellefonte’s most important hubs of economic activity, it will get a fitting place alongside the railroad tracks in Talleyrand Park. The move is scheduled to happen, weather permitting, April 18.

Preparation to move the building will begin at 8 a.m., and the move will begin at 10 a.m. It should be placed on site in Talleyrand Park by 10:30 a.m.

The museum will feature kayak history and the history of the freight building and local railroads. Renovations for it to be reused have not begun.
