Storm caused hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage, Centre County official says
Several structures were damaged, hundreds of trees were snapped and hundreds were without power for at least a couple hours Monday after high winds swept through Brush Valley.
Centre County Emergency Management Agency Director Jeff Wharran estimated the storm caused $250,000 to $500,000 of damage. Miles Township faced the most severe damage, especially between Madisonburg and Rebersburg.
Part of a roof was blown off a house in Madisonburg, a barn that belonged to an Amish family was damaged and an Amish structure that was being constructed was blown over, Wharran said Tuesday.
Several trees remained on power lines as of Tuesday afternoon, Wharran said. About seven people in Miles Township were without power as of 4:20 p.m., according to West Penn Power.
The storm passed through Madisonburg about 6:05 p.m. Monday, National Weather Service at State College meteorologist John Banghoff said Tuesday. Winds reached upward of 85 mph.
The damage spanned about 4 1/2 miles. The storm’s main corridor was about 200 yards wide, Banghoff said.
There was no lightning or thunder with the storm, AccuWeather senior meteorologist Dave Dombek said.
“For Centre County, it was just a line of showers,” Dombek said. “The winds were not too far off of the ground. There were very strong winds and those showers were able to pull down some of the really strong winds from up above.”
