Amish man injured after being hit by driver on rural Centre County road, fire chief says

An Amish man was injured during rush hour Wednesday when a driver rear-ended his horse-drawn buggy in Penns Valley, the Miles Township Fire Company chief said.

The man was hit by the driver of a sedan about 7 a.m. Wednesday near the intersection of Brush Valley Road and Rockey Top Drive, Chief Eric Miller said.

The driver crested a hill on the rural road in Miles Township, had his vision obscured by sunlight and rear-ended the horse-and-buggy, Miller said. The Amish man was flown by medical helicopter to Geisinger Medical Center.

It was not immediately known if speed, drugs or alcohol were believed to be a factor in the crash. A state police at Rockview spokesperson was not immediately able to comment.

The driver of the sedan and the horse were not injured, Miller said.

One lane of state Route 192 remained closed until about 11 a.m., state Department of Transportation spokesman Tim Nebgen said.

Penns Valley EMS and Mount Nittany EMS also responded. Police are investigating.

There were 25 crashes between 2011 and 2020 in Centre County that involved a horse-and-buggy, according to PennDOT data. Nearly half — one dozen — were reported in Miles Township.
