6 dogs were killed in a Penns Valley building fire early Monday morning. ‘It’s a shame’

A fire killed several dogs in Miles Township early Monday.

The Miles Township Fire Company responded to a fire at 2:57 a.m. Monday on the 5000 block of Brush Valley Road. While heading toward the fire, Chief Eric Miller said they could see a “heavy glow” in the sky and knew the building was completely engulfed in the fire.

An approximately 10x12 foot dog kennel caught on fire due to a propane heater that was inside the kennel, Miller said. Six dogs died in the fire, he said.

The fire was quickly under control and the fire company was at the scene for about 30-45 minutes, Miller said.

“It was pretty much cut and dry, ... it’s a shame that they lost six animals,” he said.

The original dispatch called for several fire companies, including Miles Township, Millheim, Gregg Township, Centre Hall Fire Company and a unit from Clinton County, but Miller said once he arrived at the fire and assessed the situation, he was able to hold the response to just Miles Township.
