A new weekly farmers market is coming to Centre County, with plans for growth
The Philipsburg Revitalization Corporation had to cancel its annual wine walk due to COVID-19, but the pandemic didn’t stop its members from moving forward with another project that’s been in the works for years.
The organization’s newest endeavor — a weekly farmers market — will kick off Saturday from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. on Pine Street. Along with the market, borough council approved the road closure between the intersections at east and west North Front Street to accommodate local vendors and pedestrian traffic.
“We want to try to get people into downtown, so I think the market will funnel people in,” PRC member Kevin Murphy said. “It’ll give them the opportunity to shop at a farmers market and hopefully, drive them into the brick and mortar stores down here too.”
The market could run into the fall but is contingent on vendor participation. All booths and customers are required to adhere to state and federal health and masking guidelines.
Organizers hope to feature grass-fed meats, farm fresh eggs, honey, wine, distilleries, herbs, cheeses, fruits and vegetables, baked goods, kettle corn and organic products from local growers. Food trucks may also participate.
“This will be a slow process for us,” Murphy said. “But as soon as we got the OK from the borough, we started soliciting vendors. We should have a good mix to start with and build off of that.”
Those interested in securing a spot are asked to contact the PRC at welovephilipsburg@gmail.com or message its Facebook page.
Vendors that accept EBT and county farmers market vouchers will be given first consideration.
