56-year-old Philipsburg man dies after pedestrian-vehicle crash near Cold Stream Dam
A Philipsburg man died Friday evening after being struck by a driver on U.S. Route 322 near Cold Stream Dam in Rush Township.
The crash happened at about 6:50 p.m., state police at Rockview wrote in a crash report, which described wet and rainy conditions. Joseph W. Mayes, 56, was hit when he stepped onto the eastbound lane of Port Matilda Highway (Route 322).
The driver of the 2017 Ford Escape was traveling east and did not see Mayes until impact, police wrote. The three occupants of the vehicle pulled Mayes out of a small stream and began to perform CPR until state police and then Moshannon Valley EMS arrived on the scene.
Mayes succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead on the scene by the Centre County Coroner’s Office, police wrote.
The driver of the vehicle was transported to Mount Nittany Medical Center with suspected minor injuries. The passengers were not injured.
The eastbound lane of U.S. Route 322 was closed for about two hours Friday night for the crash investigation.
Philipsburg Fire Department and Emighs Towing also assisted at the scene.
