Local crafts, moonshine, frozen yogurt and more: What to expect at new Philipsburg shop
A shop set to open next month in Philipsburg is seeking to make a place where community members can gather.
A ceremonial ribbon cutting was held Monday at Old Pop’s Corny Village Emporium, a store at 1374 Troy Hawk Run Highway that’s expected to officially open in mid-July. The business is owned by husband and wife duo Mark and Grace Crompton.
The front part of the building will sell crafts sourced from Pennsylvania vendors alongside snacks, drink mixes, and a coffee station — “with five flavors of cappuccino,” Mark Crompton said.
The back of the main store will be a live bait and tackle shop with “everything you need for fishing in Pennsylvania,” he added.
Another section of the shop will sell frozen yogurt. An addition to the building will be designed after a 1920s speakeasy and will sell moonshine from Triple Nickel Distillery in Weedville.
The shop’s unusual name comes from a story Mark Crompton told his grandson and a movie theater full of frustrated kids during a disrupted movie showing. To keep the kids entertained, he told them a story about how popcorn was invented. (According to the story, it was when a heat wave popped all the corn on Farmer Pop Corny’s land). Grace Crompton has written a children’s book that Mark illustrated, based on his original story, which will be sold at the store.
“It came out to be what it wanted to be,” Grace Crompton said Monday. “I’m very happy with the response we got today.”
Old Pop’s Corny Village Emporium will officially hold its grand opening in mid-July.
