Philipsburg residents displaced after their home is badly damaged by early morning fire

A Philipsburg family was displaced after their home was badly damaged by a fire Thursday morning.

First responders were dispatched about 5:40 a.m. Thursday to a home on the 200 block of North 9th Street that had heavy smoke billowing from the attic, Philipsburg Fire Department Chief John Huber said.

The fire was largely contained to the attic, Huber said, but the home is “not livable.” The attic was destroyed, while there was smoke and water damage throughout the two-story home.

It took “a few hours” to get the fire under control, Huber said. About 50 volunteers from at least nine other fire or EMS departments assisted. It’s not yet known what caused the fire, Huber said.

The two homeowners and their dog were evacuated. They plan to at least temporarily live with a family member. Huber said the American Red Cross was notified.

Neither the homeowners nor first responders reported any injuries, Huber said.

A page on the fundraising site GoFundMe was created, one that sought $15,000. A woman who identified herself as the daughter of the homeowners wrote “everything is lost.”

“Our family is close and we’ll do all we can for them,” she wrote.
