U.S. Route 322 reopens after train derailed in Philipsburg, snarled afternoon traffic
A train went off its tracks — but did not tip over — Wednesday afternoon in Philipsburg, snarling traffic and closing a portion of U.S. Route 322 for at least two hours.
A social media post from Philipsburg’s Hope Fire Company, posted shortly after 3:45 p.m., acknowledged a nearby “train derailment.” Photos of the train, taken by CDT photographer Abby Drey, showed part of the train off the tracks and leaning to one side.
According to dispatch reports, there were no injuries. Traffic was backed up in the area because the railroad tracks intersected major highways near the border of Centre and Clearfield counties.
All lanes of U.S. Route 322 were closed between Pleasant Hill Road and state Route 53. Route 53 was also closed between Gertrude Street and downtown Philipsburg, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.
Centre County 911 posted on Facebook that there was no access to Chester Hill via the bridge at West Maple Street on the Philipsburg side, and detours were in place.
Just after 6 p.m., PennDOT announced that all roads were back open.
