Major highway reopens after crash near Philipsburg

A major highway near Philipsburg was closed for about two hours Wednesday night after a head-on crash.

U.S. Route 322 was closed about 7:40 p.m. in both directions between East Presqueisle Street and Enterprise Drive, according to the state Department of Transportation’s real-time traffic information service. Traffic was diverted to state Route 350.

The road reopened just before 9:30 p.m., according to PennDOT.

The severity of any injuries was not immediately clear. Dispatch calls indicated the drivers crashed on the 1800 block of Port Matilda Highway in Rush Township.

A Centre County Metropolitan Planning Organization study found crashes in the Moshannon Valley Region are often more severe on average compared to countywide figures. About 10% of crashes in the region in 2023 resulted in fatal or serious injuries, while the rate was less than 6% for Centre County.
