A salon near South Philipsburg caught fire Tuesday morning, prompting emergency crews shut down a state highway for about 90 minutes.

No injuries were reported, and the cause is being investigated.

First responders from Centre and Clearfield counties were called to Bombshell Salon at 999 Tyrone Pike at 8:50 a.m. The business was set to open at 9 a.m.

Nobody was inside the salon at the time of the fire, said Justin Butterworth, deputy chief of Hope Fire Company in Philipsburg.

“The entire building sustained smoke and water damage, but the fire damage was contained to pretty much the two rooms in the center of the building,” Butterworth said.

“It’s definitely going to need some extensive renovations before it can be used as anything again, much less a salon,” he added.

Butterworth estimated 35 firefighters were on the ground, including 18 from Philipsburg. He said he was “pleasantly surprised” with the turnout.

Mountain Top, Morris Township, Columbia, Houtzdale Ramey and Moshannon Valley fire companies assisted Hope at the scene. Fire police and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation shut down the Tyrone Pike from just after Miller Road to Sleepy Hollow Road to facilitate firefighting efforts.

The scene was cleared around 10:30 a.m., and PennDOT crews salted the road so the water used for firefighting wouldn’t freeze.
